Team USA Blows Lead In World Baseball Classic To The Dominican Republic

After a dramatic win for Team USA against Columbia in the World Baseball Classic opener, the team has had a drastic turn of events in game 2. Team USA (1-1) was defeated 7-5 Saturday night in Miami Florida in front of over 37 thousand fans by the defending WBC Champions. The Dominican Republic (2-0) had to rally after being down 5-0 early. The game looked to be in hand for Team USA until the 8th inning.

Through the first couple innings the game looked to be a pitcher’s duel between Edison Volquez(DR), and Marcus Stroman(USA). The United States cracked the scoreboard in the 3rd inning after Adam Jones hit a fly ball to right center, Nelson Cruz and Starling Marte ran into each other while trying to attempt to make the catch, the ball dropped allowing a run to score. Christian Yelich added another run with a single in the same inning. Team USA would add another run in the 4th inning on a RBI single by Brandon Crawford, the San Francisco Giant shortstop also tacked on another run with an RBI double in the 6th inning to lead his team to a 5-0 lead. After the Crawford hit the game seem to turn over to the Dominican Republic.

Manny Machado got the scoring started by hitting a home run that got the Dominican team on the board. Carlos Santana added a RBI single off relief pitcher Tanner Roark that same inning. They also added a run in the 7th inning to make it 5-2 in favor of TEAM USA. The American team brought on Andrew Miller from the Cleveland Indians to try to shut down the game in the 8th inning. The inning led up to Nelson Cruz belting a 3 run homer for the Dominican team to give them a 6-5 lead. Starling Marte also added a solo shot himself to cap the scoring. Both of those players were responsible for the error that led to Team USA’s first run made up for their mistake by winning the game.

Some positives for TEAM USA was the starting pitching and the offense. Marcus Stroman threw 4.2 innings allowing no runs and only 3 hits. USA was able to get more timely hits than they did in game one.

WHAT IS NEXT FOR TEAM USA– The team will meet Canada tomorrow looking for a win, if the American team can get a win they will advance to San Diego for the next round. If they were to lose to Canada the US would need the Dominican Republic to beat Columbia in order to advance.
